Two is a big, busy age. Your child runs instead of walks, climbs onto anything they can reach, and suddenly puts words together: “more milk”, “daddy car”, “no sleep”. They want to choose their own shoes, pour their own water and do everything “by myself”. If you are thinking about nursery for your two-year-old, you are probably wondering what they will actually do all day, and whether it will help them grow.
At Balloon Nursery, our Early Years programme is built for children at exactly this stage, with space to move, plenty of language and gentle support as they learn to manage big feelings. If your question is really “when should my child start nursery?”, our guide to the right age to start nursery covers that. This article is about what life looks like for a two-year-old at nursery, and how you can help at home.
One note before we start: the ages below are approximate. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes milestones as things most children (75% or more) can do by a certain age. Some children get there earlier, some a little later, and both are usually fine.
Moving: running, kicking and climbing
By two, most children are steady on their feet and keen to test what their bodies can do. According to the CDC checklist for 2 years, most children can kick a ball, walk (not climb) up a few stairs with or without help, and eat with a spoon. Over the next months many learn to jump off the ground with both feet.
That is why active play matters so much at this age. A good nursery day includes time to run, push, climb, dig and dance, both indoors and outside when the weather is kind. The World Health Organization recommends that children aged one to two are physically active for at least 180 minutes a day, spread through the day, and that two-year-olds have no more than one hour of screen time a day (less is better).
Talking: from single words to short sentences
Language grows fast between two and three. The CDC says most two-year-olds say at least two words together, like “more milk”, point to things in a book when you ask (“Where is the bear?”) and point to at least two body parts. By 30 months, the CDC checklist says most children use about 50 words and name things in a book when you point and ask.
At nursery, children hear language all day: songs and rhymes, stories, and caregivers who talk through what they are doing (“You’re putting the blue block on top!”). At home, keep it simple. Read together every day, name things on the way to the car, and give your child time to answer before you jump in.
Many Sharjah families speak Arabic at home while their child also hears English at nursery. Mixing words from both languages at this age is normal and not a sign of confusion. Our article on raising a bilingual child in Sharjah explains more.
Playing: side by side, then together
Two-year-olds love other children, but they are still learning how to play with them. The CDC notes that children this age play next to each other but do not yet know how to share or solve problems. You will also see the first pretend play: feeding a doll, “cooking” in a toy kitchen, talking on a toy phone.
Nursery gives children many small chances to practise: waiting for a turn on the slide, joining a song circle, handing a friend the red crayon. Squabbles over toys are normal. A good caregiver helps children find words (“Ask Sara: can I have a turn?”) instead of simply taking the toy away.
Feelings: big emotions and “I can do it myself”
At two, children feel things strongly and do not yet have the words or the self-control to manage them. Tantrums, the word “no” and sudden tears are all part of this stage. The CDC notes that most two-year-olds notice when others are hurt or upset, and look at your face to see how to react in a new situation. That is the start of empathy.
The wish to be independent is a gift, even when it is slow. Letting a child try to put on their shoes, wash their hands or carry their own bag builds confidence.

When to talk to your paediatrician
The CDC advises talking to your child’s doctor if your child is not meeting one or more milestones for their age, has lost skills they once had, or if you have any other concern. It is not a diagnosis, just an early check that can put your mind at rest.
Every child develops at their own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a 2-year-old do at nursery?
A two-year-old’s nursery day is mostly play: running and climbing, songs and stories, building, painting and pretend play, with meals and rest in between. Through this play they practise new words, movement and getting along with other children.
My 2-year-old only says a few words. Should I worry?
According to the CDC, most two-year-olds say at least two words together, like “more milk”. Children develop at different speeds, and hearing two languages does not cause delays. If you are worried, talk to your paediatrician.
Is it normal for a 2-year-old to have tantrums at nursery?
Yes. At two, children feel strong emotions but cannot yet put them into words or calm themselves. Patient caregivers help them name their feelings and settle again.
From what age does Balloon Nursery take children?
We welcome children from 45 days old up to 4 years.
What are the nursery opening hours?
Balloon Nursery is open every day from 6:30am to 7:30pm, with early drop-off from 6:00am on request.
