One of the most common questions parents ask before enrolling their child is: when should my child actually start nursery? The UAE has one of the most diverse early childhood education landscapes in the world, and getting the timing right can make a significant difference to how smoothly your child settles in.
The Official KHDA/SPEA Guidelines
In the UAE, most licensed nurseries accept children from 45 days old. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) in Dubai and the equivalent regulatory bodies in Sharjah set minimum age requirements for different programmes. Many nurseries offer infant care from around two months, transitioning into toddler programmes from 18 months, and Foundation Stage 1 from around age 3.
At Balloon Nursery in Sharjah, we welcome children from 45 days old through to KG2, so families have the flexibility to enrol at the stage that suits their child best.
What Does Child Development Research Say?
Early childhood experts broadly agree that children are social learners from a very young age. Research published by early years bodies consistently shows that quality nursery experiences before the age of three support language development, social skills, and emotional regulation. However, readiness matters more than the calendar date.
A child who is emotionally ready at 18 months may thrive in a well-structured toddler programme, while another child may benefit from waiting until two or two-and-a-half. There is no single correct age, only the right conditions.
Signs Your Child May Be Ready for Nursery
Rather than going purely by age, look for these readiness signs:
- Your child shows curiosity about other children and wants to interact
- They can spend short periods away from you without extreme distress
- They are beginning to follow simple instructions
- They are mobile (walking or close to it) if joining a toddler group
- They are showing interest in play, books, and their surroundings
If your child ticks most of these, they are likely ready. A good nursery will also support children who need extra settling-in time.
Working Families and Practical Realities
In the UAE, many families have two working parents or rely on domestic support for childcare. Starting nursery younger, from around 12 to 18 months, can actually benefit some children by providing structured social time, language exposure, and qualified early years educators at a critical developmental window.
If you are balancing work and family, enrolling from a younger age at a registered, high-quality nursery is a sound choice. The key is choosing a nursery where trained staff follow a recognised curriculum and where your child genuinely feels safe and happy.
What Happens If You Start Too Late?
Children who enter formal education at FS1 (age 3-4) without any prior nursery experience sometimes find the transition harder, especially in terms of social skills and classroom routines. While they absolutely catch up, an earlier start often means a smoother FS1 experience and a stronger foundation for primary school.
That said, late starters thrive every day. A nurturing environment and an attentive teaching team matter far more than the exact enrolment date.
Our Recommendation at Balloon Nursery
Based on our years of experience with families across Sharjah, we find that children who join between 18 months and two years old tend to settle most naturally. By this age, most children are walking, are beginning to talk, and are genuinely curious about the world around them. The toddler years are an ideal time to begin the nursery journey.
That said, we welcome families at every stage. Whether your baby is two months old or your child is ready to begin FS1, our team is here to make the transition warm, confident, and calm.
