Every year on 3 November, the UAE celebrates Flag Day. Homes, offices, schools and nurseries raise the red, green, white and black flag together, usually at 11am. For a toddler, this is not about history lessons. It is about colours, music, waving something bright and feeling part of a happy moment with the people around them.
Celebrating small national moments like this fits naturally into early learning. In our Early Years programme, children learn about the world around them through play, songs and hands-on activities, and Flag Day is a lovely chance to do the same at home. Below you will find simple, safe ideas for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers, most of which need only paper, crayons and a little time.
If you would like background on the day itself, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains that Flag Day marks a moment of national unity, when people across the country raise the flag at the same time.
Why simple celebrations matter for under-4s
Young children learn best when they can see, touch and move. A flag gives them four strong colours to name, a shape to colour in, and an object to hold up high. Joining in with family and friends also builds a sense of belonging. Even a baby who cannot yet talk will enjoy watching a flag flutter and hearing everyone cheer.
Keep it short and fun. Five to ten minutes of an activity is plenty for a two-year-old. If they wander off, that is fine. You can come back to it later.
Flag Day ideas by age
Babies (from a few months to 1 year)
- Colour watching: hold a small flag or a piece of red, green, white or black fabric in front of your baby and move it slowly from side to side. Name each colour as you go.
- Flag in the breeze: stand near a window or on the balcony with a paper flag and let your baby watch it move. Talk softly about what they see.
- Song time: sing a short, gentle song while clapping your baby’s hands together. Repetition is what babies love most.
Toddlers (1 to 2 years)
- Colour-in flag: draw a large flag outline on A4 paper and give your toddler chunky crayons. Do not worry about staying inside the lines. Scribbling is how fine motor skills begin.
- Sticker flag: stick big coloured stickers (red, green, black) onto a white sheet in the flag pattern. Peeling stickers is great practice for little fingers.
- Wave and march: put on some music and march around the living room waving paper flags. This builds balance and coordination, and it is a lot of fun.
Two to four years
- Handprint flag: paint your child’s palm red and press it on the left side of a paper, then add green, white and black stripes with a sponge or brush.
- Colour hunt: ask your child to find something red, something green, something white and something black around the house. Line them up like a flag.
- Flag biscuits or fruit plate: arrange strawberries or watermelon, kiwi or grapes, banana slices and a few dark fruits like blackberries in the shape of the flag. Talk about each colour and count the pieces together. Cut fruit into small, safe pieces for young children.
- Two languages, one flag: name the colours in Arabic and in English: أحمر red, أخضر green, أبيض white, أسود black. Children who hear both languages at home and at nursery often enjoy showing off the words they know.
Keeping crafts safe for little ones
- Use washable, child-safe crayons and paints made for young children.
- Avoid small beads, buttons, pins and loose glitter with children under 3, as small parts can be a choking risk.
- Choose paper flags or soft fabric. Avoid flags on sharp sticks for toddlers.
- Always stay with your child during craft time and put supplies away afterwards.
Respecting the flag, the toddler way
Older children can learn a few simple ideas: we hold the flag carefully, we do not put it on the floor, and we stand together when it is raised. Keep it positive. Praise your child when they hold their flag up proudly, rather than correcting them for small mistakes.
How Balloon Nursery does it
At Balloon Nursery in Al Ghafia, Sharjah, we follow the British EYFS curriculum with Montessori-style, hands-on learning, so national celebrations become play: colours, crafts, music and movement, in both Arabic and English. We care for children from 45 days to 4 years and are open every day from 6:30am to 7:30pm. You can read more about how children learn in our curriculum, and how we support little ones aged one to two in our toddler room.
If you are raising your child with two languages, our guide to raising a bilingual child in Sharjah has more simple ideas for home.
